An iPaaS provides managed tools for connecting applications, transforming messages, orchestrating flows, and monitoring reusable integrations.

When it applies: It applies when the number of systems grows and point-to-point integrations become difficult to govern, observe, and maintain.
What it is confused with: It is not just ETL. It may cover events, APIs, and operational processes, although some capabilities overlap with data platforms.
Architecture consequence: The architecture should avoid turning it into an opaque home for business logic and define contracts, ownership, and error recovery.
